In conjunction with the city’s plan to revitalize the Northgate neighborhood, the General Development Plan outlined a 15-year program for improvements to three sites comprising 67 acres. In collaboration with Callison Architects and KPFF civil engineers, Atelier provided landscape architectural and planning services for expansion of the Northgate Mall as a mixed-use development.
Completed in 2007, the expansion included a new community square surrounded by retail, restaurants, office space, and theatres. Landscape, hardscape and open space improvements throughout the project area were designed to transform the existing parking lots into a pedestrian-friendly environment. In addition, our work included section studies, design and planting of some of the city’s first bioretention cells (rain gardens).
This placed Northgate Mall at the forefront of innovation in Low Impact Development, and created a demonstration project for showcasing and monitoring stormwater management.
