Mendenhall Campground and Skater’s Cabin

Mendenhall Lake Campground comprises 150 acres near the face of Mendenhall Glacier among a complex system of shorelines, kettles, moraines and wetlands that are the headwaters of the Mendenhall River. Atelier was prime consultant for campground renovation to upgrade facilities and restore environmental resources. The project involved road and spur reconstruction, new utility systems; restrooms, shower houses and vault toilets; barrier free campsites and a four-mile system of boardwalks and trails. Built as a glacier observatory by the CCC, the historic Skater’s Cabin contemporary function is as a warming hut for winter activities. In addition to facility improvements, biotechnical applications were utilized for shoreline restoration to integrate ADA accessibility to the shoreline, and re-establish native riparian vegetation.
