Communita | Atelier is assisting Blake Holdings and VIA Architecture on a new senior living facility located in the Laurelhurst neighborhood of Seattle. The building includes four outdoor amenity spaces – a Basement Level viewing courtyard; a Level 1 memory care escorted walking garden; a Level 2 memory care courtyard; and a Roof Level outdoor amenity space.
The Basement Level courtyard is designed as a visual amenity for the adjacent multi-purpose room and future tenant leasing office/lounge area and includes a zen-like plantings, stones, and paving. The Level 1 memory care escorted walking garden features a variety of trees and seating areas with differing focal features to help orient residents. The Level 2 memory care courtyard serves as an unescorted outdoor space for memory care patients, and is part of a larger loop path that continues inside the common spaces. The Roof Level amenity area is oriented to take advantage of southern views to Mount Rainier while providing a variety of seating and activity areas. Activities include a resident gardening area with potting bench, a Chef’s garden area with herbs, greens, and fruits, grill area, communal dining area, private dining area, conversational lounge spaces, and a dog walk.
Close coordination with SDOT and Urban Forestry led to the retention of an exceptional Saucer Magnolia tree at the southeast corner of the site. The tree was identified as a community treasure by local residents and its retention will continue its contribution to the streetscape and community.
