Block 19 Apartments is a new 135-unit luxury apartment building located in the Issaquah Highlands neighborhood. Communita | Atelier is providing landscape architectural services for the design team which includes Clark Barnes Architects, Trammell Crow Residential, and Sumitomo Forestry America.
Street level design features include a vehicular woonerf drop-off and turnaround, bike shelter and work station, and covered outdoor gathering area. On-grade residential patios will provide individual entries to street level townhouse units from the sidewalk. A grass berm mounded play area at the northeast corner of the site is designed to encourage natural play. A small seating area overlooks the play mounds. Vertical art elements identify driveway access locations.
Generous courtyard and rooftop amenity spaces provide outdoor common areas for resident use. These spaces will vary in size and function to incorporate the needs of residents and their guests. Included are barbeque areas, dining and lounging spaces, opportunities for play, and a swimming pool. Private patios will be organized around the courtyard and will be separated with planting and screening between units and the public zone. The courtyard will be a mosaic of public and private indoor-outdoor spaces. A covered amenity space adjacent to the pool will extend the usability of this courtyard through the seasons and in all weather conditions
The landscape design will employ a native, adaptive, and drought tolerant plant palette. In keeping with the “Traditional Townscape” landscape concept, plantings will be more formal in character becoming more urban adjacent to the building. The planting design will shift to a more informal character along the north and east edges of the site.
